The manufacturing industry has played a major role in our society's history. Although time and technology have dramatically changed the landscape for the manufacturing industry, it still continues to be a large contributor to the U.S. economy in a number of ways. Currently in the United States, there are about 300,000 manufacturing businesses that employ roughly 11.2 million individuals.

Since 2008, the region has seen some decrease in the numbers for manufacturing employment. Currently, there are approximately 133,000 people who are employed in the manufacturing industry sector in Central Pennsylvania. This represents almost a 23% loss since 2008. While the numbers are down, 2015 showed some positive movement in manufacturing employment over 2014. The region  saw a growth of about 3% over that time period.
In breaking out manufacturing employment on a county-by-county basis in Central PA, we learn that York County in 2015 had the highest number of employees in this sector (34,100) followed by Lancaster (33,900) and Berks (22,900) Counties. Percentage-wise, Perry County saw the highest impact from loss of manufacturing employees from 2008 to 2015 (a loss of about 58.8%). Lebanon County saw the least amount of negative impact to manufacturing employment over that same time period (a loss of about 8.5%). Berks, Cumberland, Perry, and York Counties all witnessed some growth in the number of manufacturing employees between 2014 and 2015.

For the purposes of classifying business establishments to collect and analyze statistical data related to the U.S. business economy, federal statistical agencies use the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). There are 85 NAICS codes that are related to the manufacturing industry.  In 2015, the top manufacturing industry classification for employment in Central Pennsylvania was Printing & related support activities. There were 10,426 employees of businesses that are grouped under this classification (about 8.03% of the total manufacturing employment in the region).
